Book Check-In 12/6/20

I read a lot of books since my last check-in! I read 4 books, two of which I mentioned having started by last check-in. I read Echoes of a Giantkiller and Remember the Dust by E. Jade Lomax (#2 & #3 respectively of the Leagues and Legends trilogy), Anne of Windy Poplars by L.M. Montgomery (#4 of the Anne of Green Gables series), and Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson.

Book Check-In 11/24/20

I’m late again. My last check-in was 11/11. I didn’t check in at all last week! Since then I read 5 books, but I’ll only be talking about 3 of them here. I mentioned in that last check-in that I was reading Two Dark Reigns by Kendare Blake. Unfortunately it got returned to the library before I finished, so that update will have to wait for a while longer. I instead read Thick as Thieves by Megan Whalen Turner (#5 in the Queen’s Thief series), Frankenstein by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, and Beanstalk by E. Jade Lomax (#1 in the Leagues and Legends series)

Book Check-In 11/11/20

`This week I finished 3 books! 2 audiobooks and one ebook. I read both of the books I mentioned I had started in my last check in: A Conspiracy of Kings by Megan Whalen Turner (book 4 of the Queen’s Thief series) and Anne of Avonlea by L.M. Montgomery (as an audiobook). Then, I checked out the next book in the Anne series, Anne of the Island by L.M. Montgomery (also as an audiobook), and finished it too!

These are all middle books in series, so there will be spoilers for the previous books (and these ones) in my discussion.

Book Check-In 10/5/20

This week I read (listened to) Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. I had never actually read this one before, despite loving the 2005 movie adaptation!

Like I mentioned in my last check in, I’ve been listening to more audiobooks at work, especially classics that I might have a hard time actually getting through.

Book Check-In 9/29/20

It’s been 2 weeks since my last check-in, and I’ve only finished one book. Little Women, by Louisa May Alcott (as an audiobook).

I was given a copy of this as a little girl, that I think was an abridged version. I think something about the description turned me off so I never read it. I’ve started listening to audiobooks at work, and I’m liking listening to classics that I otherwise probably wouldn’t read.

Book Check-In 9/14/20

This week I’ll be talking about Anne of Green Gables, by L.M. Montgomery. I mentioned I was listening to this as an audiobook in last week’s check-in.

I’m not normally a big audiobook person, but I’m working a weird shift by myself at work, so it gets pretty boring and quiet. So I’ve been listening to a lot of podcasts and decided to throw some audiobooks in there too!

Book Check-In 9/7/20

This week I finished both the books I mentioned I had started in my last check in! The Fire Keeper by J.C. Cervantes and The Hazel Wood by Melissa Albert.

The Fire Keeper is based on Maya legends and is a middle grade book meant to give representation. It’s part of the Rick Riordan Presents collection, which I’ve talked about in several of my previous check-ins. This is the second in a series.

The Hazel Wood is a story based in fairy tales. It follows Alice, whose grandmother wrote a cult classic collection of fairy tales. When the grandmother dies, Alice and her mother think they might finally be free of their bad luck curse, and try and settle down, but the bad luck catches up in the form of Alice’s mother being kidnapped. Alice has no choice but to turn to a fan of her grandmother to try and find answers, and her mother.

Book Check-In 8/2/20

It’s been 2 weeks since my last check in, sorry about that. Got very lazy, been struggling with motivation working from home. Also had some stressful work stuff so just haven’t been doing much.

But, in those two weeks, I read 3 books! (Well, 2 books and a graphic novel). 2 were the ones mentioned in my last check in: Children of Virtue and Vengeance by Tomi Adeyemi, and Deathless Divide by Justina Ireland. The 3rd was the graphic novel Check Please Book 1: #Hockey by Ngozi Ukazu. I technically had read it as a webcomic but I did like the format of having it collected with the extras in a book. (Side note: it wasn’t until I put these three covers together that I realized all these books were written by black women.)
